Chapter 11

I assumed we’d haul the parts to the cave, but when I asked, Dad shook his head. I was confused. The cave was supposed to be so well hidden; no one even knew it existed. Dad turned like he was heading to Fred’s, not towards his own house.

“How come you’re not gonna put the artifact in the cave?” I asked.

He looked at me, still unhappy, but he answered. “The artifact can’t be around the gold. The pieces are attracted to each other, they would want to reassemble.”

“Can that happen?” I asked, amazed. I kept imagining the parts flying towards each other, putting themselves back into the original form, and starting up.

“They’ll exert a magical compulsion on whoever is close. It will become a driving force that is difficult and nearly impossible to resist. It’s best just to keep them separated by distance. Fred has a strong room in his house, it’s as safe as we can make it there.”

“Will they be able to sense it now?”

He turned to me. “Can you sense it?”

I hadn’t thought about it. I wasn’t used to sensing things outside of my eyes, ears, nose, and skin. I cocked my head and attempted to open my inner senses. I sat still for a minute or two, eyes closed, noticing my reactions to the environment. I was hungry, the truck was a little too cold for me, but not enough to bother turning on the heat. I could hear the engine, the road noise, and the radio was turned on, but low enough it was a background irritant. I reached up and flipped it off. Those were normal senses. I reached out. That’s when I realized I had a buzz, an itch under my skin that I’d been trying to brush away. I opened my eyes.

“Yeah, I think I do. It’s like an itch or a vibration I can’t reach and can’t really tell where it’s coming from.”

He nodded. “Yes, you are feeling the magic. It’s calling to your blood. You must be shadow winged or a Sky Person to work the machine. The magic that runs it is inherent to your blood.”

“Does that mean that people like Jed would still feel it, or would it lessen the further removed from the Sky People you get?”

He frowned. Maybe he hadn’t thought about it. Or maybe he was trying to do the genetic math, so to speak.

“I would think if you can shift, your blood is strong enough to access the machine,” he finally answered. “However, you may have trouble sensing it over interference like from a metal truck, or a building. You may actually have to touch it to feel the magic.”

“So, how far away can you go and still feel it?”

“I’d estimate I can sense it from approximately a hundred feet away,” he answered. “You should be able to as well, and Eagle will too.”

“I hope that Fred’s strong room is deep in the middle of his house,” I huffed. “If anyone wanders around it, they’ll be able to feel it.
